Have you ever considered a studio session for your next set of family photos? My at-home sessions have become what I’m best known for here in Orange County. However, studio sessions hold an equally special important place. There’s something about a simple, light-filled space that lets a family’s connection take center stage, with nothing else competing for attention.
Being a parent myself, I know how much stuff a family photoshoot can involve. A studio session gently strips all of that away. There’s no weather to plan around, no harsh midday sun, and no wind in anyone’s hair. Just soft, even light and plenty of room to simply be together.
Why families love studio sessions
The beauty of a studio session is how distraction free it is. The light is soft and consistent, so we’re never racing the sun or rescheduling for rain. The backdrop is clean and timeless. This means your photos won’t feel tied to a particular trend or season. Instead, they’ll look just as lovely on your wall in ten years as they do today. Studio sessions also have an intimate feeling. Without a busy background pulling focus, every frame comes back to the same thing: your family, and the way you are together. For many of my clients, that minimalism is exactly what they’re hoping for.
What a studio session looks like
When you arrive, we begin once everyone has settled in. I’ll usually take the first few minutes to chat. I let the kids explore the space and help everyone feel at ease. From there, my sessions are movement-based combined with natural poses that flatter. I’ll offer gentle prompts: an easy walk toward me, etc. Then I step back and let the real moments unfold. Sessions typically last one to two hours, depending on the package you book and the pace of your family. There’s no rush. Kids are welcome to move, play, and take breaks. In fact, some of my very favorite frames come from those in-between moments.
The studio sessions I offer
Because a studio works beautifully for so many seasons of life, I offer a few different kinds of sessions in various studios around Orange County.
Family studio sessions are a lovely choice for families who want clean, timeless portraits without the variables of an outdoor photoshoot. They work especially well for bringing generations together. For example, this means from grandparents down to the littlest ones.
Maternity studio sessions are some of my most tender work. I’m just wrapped up a maternity session with a couple expecting their first baby. The quiet of the studio gave us room for all the soft, minimalist moments: a hand resting on a belly, a slow movement pause. This particular client wanted a minimalist look, so she chose simple, pared-back outfits to match that mood. To keep her comfortable, we brought in a few different seating arrangements and kept things moving the whole time. This way, there was never a chance to feel awkward, and a little background music helped break up any tension. A studio lets that kind of intimacy breathe.

“The photos turned out even better than I could have imagined — I’m honestly obsessed with them. She made the whole experience feel so easy, comfortable, and fun from start to finish.”
— Georgina, maternity studio session
Milestone and baby studio sessions document your family chapters that pass so quickly: newborn embrace, a baby learning to sit, a first birthday. The calm, controlled environment keeps little ones comfortable and lets us focus entirely on those fleeting details.
How to prep (it’s easier than you think)
Prep for a studio session is refreshingly simple (my love language). The biggest piece are outfits. Once you book, I’ll send you a styling guide with plenty of guidance. Soft, neutral tones tend to photograph beautifully against a studio backdrop and keep the focus on your family’s faces. However, please experiment with color. The goal is comfortable and coordinated.
Beyond that, bring whatever helps your family feel at home: a favorite toy, a comfort item, snacks for little ones, and a relaxed attitude. Nothing has to be perfect. That ease is a big part of what makes these sessions feel so natural.
Studio or in-home? Both are perfection
I’m often asked which I’d recommend, and the truth is they each tell a different kind of story. An in-home session captures your family inside your everyday world, with all its familiar, lived-in details. A studio session is the opposite kind of beautiful: pared back and simple, with the focus entirely on your family. If you’re torn between the two, I’m always happy to talk it through. I can show you examples of my work, and you can read more about my at-home family sessions in Orange County to help you decide.
Where I photograph in Orange County
I welcome families to my studio sessions from across Orange County, including Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Santa Ana, and the surrounding areas. If you’re traveling in from a little further out, just reach out. I’m always happy to make it work.
Studio session FAQs
How long is a studio session? Most sessions run between one and two hours, depending on the package you book and the pace of your family. For extended families, I usually recommend a longer session so we have time to include everyone.
How many photos will I receive? You’ll receive a curated gallery of high-resolution edited images, delivered through a private online gallery you can download and share.
What should we wear? I’ll send you a styling guide once you book, and I’m happy to help you pull outfits. Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully in the studio. The goal is comfortable and coordinated. Choose texture over pattern instead of matching.
Can you photograph maternity and newborn sessions in the studio? Yes. The studio is a calm, controlled space that works great for maternity, newborn, and milestone sessions, as well as classic family editorial style portraits.
Do you also offer at-home sessions? I do. If you’d rather be photographed in your own space, my at-home family sessions might be a better fit, and I’m glad to help you decide between the two.
When will I get my photos back? Final galleries are typically delivered within two weeks of your session.
