There is something about the OC coastline that makes even the most camera shy family relax. Maybe it’s the sound of the waves or that staring at the ocean can be mesmerizing. Whatever it is, beach family sessions have a way of feeling less like a photoshoot and more like an evening you’d spend together anyway.
I photograph beach family sessions throughout Orange County, and I’m at the beach with my own family enough to know which spots actually work, and which ones are beautiful but not quite right by golden hour.
Why Orange County beach sessions work for families
The ocean is one of the best equalizers for kids who don’t enjoy posing for the camera. There’s always something to look at, something to collect, and plenty of waves to chase. That’s what I want to photograph. your kids running through the water while you try to keep up, the way your toddler holds both your hands and leans against your body to brave the edge of a wave, and the moment everyone finally pauses to exhale.
I don’t pose you at the water’s edge and ask you to look at the camera. I document what actually happens when your family is at the beach together. Timeless photos are what you’ll actually want to hang on your wall in ten years.
Where I photograph in Orange County
I photograph beach sessions at several locations throughout Orange County depending on your family’s vibe and what time of year it is. My most requested spots include:
Crescent Bay, Laguna Beach — This one is my favorite. Sheltered cove, dramatic rock formations, and just far enough from the main Laguna strip that it doesn’t feel crowded. The light here at golden hour is exceptional. See a recent session at Crescent Bay →
Crystal Cove State Beach — A little more rugged and wild. Great for families who want something that doesn’t look like every other OC beach photo.
Corona del Mar — Calm, scenic, and easy for little ones. The tide pools are a bonus if you have curious kids.
Newport Beach / Balboa Peninsula — Good for families who want a classic SoCal beach feel.
If you have a favorite spot, let me know. I’m open to exploring locations I haven’t photographed at before.
For visiting families
Many of the families I photograph at the beach aren’t local to Orange County. They’re visiting Laguna Beach, Newport, or Dana Point and want to bring home something better than phone photos from their trip. If that’s you, I completely understand the timeline pressure. I book a limited number of sessions each month, so reaching out as early as possible (even before your trip is fully planned) gives us the best shot at finding a time that works.
Beach family sessions in Orange County work especially well for visiting families because the location is already part of your itinerary. We’re just adding in a photographer to an evening you would have spent there anyway.
What to expect at a beach session
My sessions typically start about an hour before sunset, that’s when the light goes from harsh and flat to the warm, golden quality that makes beach photos look like beach photos. Plan to arrive a few minutes early so everyone has time to settle in before we start.
Shoes are optional and sandy feet is guaranteed. Kids who said they didn’t want photos will usually be chasing waves within the first ten minutes and forget I’m there entirely.
Sessions run one to two hours depending on the package you’ve booked. Styling is something I take seriously because the way your family looks in photos is part of the story. Before your session, I’ll send a styling guide, and for families who want more hands-on help, I often set aside time to FaceTime and go through your actual closet together. We’ll pull colors, textures, and fabrics that work cohesively so nothing feels forced or over-coordinated. If there’s a gap, I’ll point you toward a few pieces that fill it in. The goal is that effortless, put-together look that feels like you, not like you tried too hard for a photoshoot.
Beach family session FAQs
What time of year is best for beach sessions in Orange County? Honestly, most of the year. Fall is my personal favorite. The crowds thin out after Labor Day, but the weather stays warm and the light is stunning. Summer is popular, especially for visiting families, though I recommend arriving earlier in the day or going right at golden hour to beat the beach traffic.
What should we wear to a beach session? I’ll send you a full styling guide once you book, and I’m always happy to jump on a call and help you pull outfits from your own closet. Avoid bright logos or anything too matchy. Flowy dresses add beautiful movement for moms, linen layered shirts with a contrasting tee for dads built a relaxed look, and kids in soft fibers they can move in.
Do kids need to love the ocean for this to work? Not at all. Some of my favorite beach sessions have been with toddlers who were genuinely suspicious of the water and spent the whole session playing in the dry sand while their parents watched. That’s a real moment too.
How many photos will I receive? You’ll receive a curated gallery of high-resolution edited images delivered through a private online gallery you can download and share.
Do you travel to beaches outside Orange County? Yes! I photograph along the Southern California coast and have traveled to San Diego and the LA area. Travel fees may apply for sessions outside Orange County. Just reach out and we can figure out the details.
