When a family reaches out about extended family photos, I always like to take the time to chat with them first. I want to hear a little about who they are. I also want to know why they’re wanting photos at this point in their life. This recent session at Capistrano Beach was a family I connected with immediately. I could hear the enthusiasm in their voices and how much my style of family photography resonated with them.
They visit Orange County every year and stay near Capistrano Beach as a large family. It’s a tradition I love, because it gives them a chance to document multigenerational photos like these. These are the kind of photos I hope they’ll look back on for years to come.
Planning extended family photos at Capistrano Beach
Their request was simple: photos with the grandbaby, extended family portraits, small breakout moments for her daughters, and a few individual lifestyle portraits. With a group this size, I recommended a two-hour documentary session. This way we could take our time and capture everything without rushing anyone.
Our prep call was so important for a session like this. We talked through what to expect, timing, and outfit coordination. I think they did such a gorgeous job weaving everyone’s personality into their outfit choices. It’s cohesive without being overly matchy.
