One of the best parts of my job is documenting multi-generational family photos. There’s something about getting everyone in one room: the energy, the love, the gentle chaos of it all. When this family reached out, they planned an at-home lifestyle session with their newborn twins, joined by both sets of grandparents.

At-home newborn session prep
Prepping for this at-home newborn session meant scheduling a call with mom ahead of time. This way, she had real guidance on what to wear and what to suggest to the family. Colors, textures, and relaxed at-home clothing made all the difference here. Given their minimal, airy interior, I suggested they lean into light and neutral tones. They nailed it. Mom chose a matching knit set for the twins, and those tiny sweaters were absolutely everything. To highlight a cozy environment for newborn twins at home, soft knits and gentle hues are ideal.
After giving birth, soft textures against the skin aren’t just comfortable. They read beautifully on camera and say something about your personality without you having to try. It sets the whole tone for a relaxed, at-home session with their twins. An extra tip for newborn at home photos: keep the space clutter free to allow natural light to flow in.
Two hour sessions for extended families
Having both sets of grandparents present meant this was a full extended family photoshoot. Multiple personalities, different groupings, and everyone wanting their own moments with the twins. For sessions like this, I always recommend booking my two-hour documentary session. It gives us plenty of time to move through family groupings, and it leaves room for the intimate, quieter portraits with mom, dad, and just the babies.
With newborns, there are naturally a lot of moving parts, yet this one was remarkably calm and flowed beautifully from start to finish. By building in that extra time on the clock, no one feels rushed and we could simply slow down and be present.
If you’re expecting a baby and beginning your search for an Irvine newborn photographer, I’d love to hear from you!
