As an at-home family photographer in Orange County, the question I get most is: why not just book a studio? There’s something about natural light inside a home that a studio simply can’t replicate. It’s softer, more personal. When it’s working in your favor, it makes everyone look exactly like themselves, only more so.
Morning is my favorite time for at-home sessions. Light comes in low and warm, filling living rooms and gathering spots in a way that feels effortless. It does the heavy lifting so we don’t have to.
The first thing I look for when I step into a client’s home: windows and corners.
I’ll always ask to open the blinds and pull back the curtains. Even a small amount of light is enough to illuminate faces and create something genuinely intimate. This particular home had beautiful light throughout. As a result, we could move freely from room to room, including the baby’s nursery. With light-colored interiors and soft pops of color, I asked the family to choose clothing in tones that would work in harmony. That included her parents and sister who had traveled all the way from Korea to be there for the arrival of their newborn.
The second thing I look for is the direction of the light.
Knowing where light is coming from tells me exactly how to position everyone, so faces are flattered and nothing is lost in shadow. I also like to let the world outside the windows stay in the frame. The view, the season, the quality of light streaming in, these quiet details place a timestamp on the images. Years from now, those small things will make the photos feel like they’re still breathing.
If you’re a family in Orange County, in Irvine, Newport Coast, Laguna Niguel, or anywhere in between, and you’ve been sitting with the idea of an at-home session, I’d love to hear from you. This is the kind of work I find most meaningful. I’d be glad to talk through what it might look like for your family.
