This family booked last minute to mark their baby’s very first trip to the ocean. Mama had been picturing it for months, the first time those little feet met the Pacific, and we made it happen in the last hour of light.
They chose a weekday evening, which meant easy parking (any parent knows that’s a win) and long stretches of sand to ourselves. I came early to scout, the way I always do at Shaw’s Cove. It’s one of my favorite places to shoot: tucked in, softly lit, and quiet enough that a family can forget a camera is there at all.
Their little one was just getting over a cold, so we kept the whole evening gentle. We stayed near the shoreline, close and unhurried with quiet snuggles, a burst of laughter, the small in-between moments that tend to be the ones you keep. In under an hour we had a gallery full of warm, honest photographs by the ocean.
Why Families Love Shaw’s Cove
Shaw’s Cove is one of Laguna’s hidden gems. It’s smaller than the main beaches, which makes it feel private, and the rock formations frame the water beautifully. The walk down is short and easy which is a real consideration with young children, and the shoreline stays calm enough for little ones to wander and explore. A Few Notes for Families Visiting Orange County
Timing. Sunset is worth planning around. The light is soft, the crowds thin out, and the air finally cools.
Parking. Look near Cliff Drive and Fairview, and give yourself 20–30 minutes of margin.
What to wear. Light neutrals, coastal blues, and soft earthy tones hold golden light beautifully.
