Catch a quick ferry ride to Whidbey Island from Seattle and you have the opportunity to visit some of the most scenic areas of Washington. I discovered Whidbey Island after visiting with my own family when we were looking for a spot to distance from people during COVID lockdown. We only visited one beach that afternoon and quickly fell in love, but then afterwards realized we had only scratched the surface.
This post is all about one of my favorite day trips. Ebey’s Landing is located about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Seattle and a very scenic and short ferry ride from North Seattle. Take the ferry and enjoy the views, but you can easily take a scenic drive on I-5 and pass a lot of beautiful spots to stop and visit along the way.
On this day, we chose to take the ferry since we managed to catch it in time with plenty of extra time left over to grab a quick bite and gas up on the island. I met my couple about 15 minutes before we began taking photos to go over their story and quickly go over the landscape. Ebey’s Landing is really unique to me because of it’s viewpoints. You arrive at a small parking lot – don’t forget your Discover Pass – and then walk up a short wooden staircase up to the meadow grass area. Sweet meadow flowers pop up here in the Springtime well into early Summer. We had a few left over for our session day with my couple.
The meadow area is basically a long 5.6 mile hike that will take you through private farmland and behind private property. We walked up as far as we could to grab some beautiful views and take in all the scenery. There are gorgeous scenic sunset views from the top with the meadow area giving plenty of space to run and walk. However, missing out on the sun peeking from behind the hills of Ebey’s Landing is not to be missed. We timed our session to end just after sundown to capture some sweet moody images that perfectly set the mood for this beautiful couple.
You can see how amazing this spot is for a dramatic backdrop. It’s great for couples, engagement photos, and memorable surprise proposals. The blue waters below are stunning and give an expansive unobstructed view to enjoy a sunset or watch the stars.
