Are you interested in capturing those first few weeks or months at home with a newborn baby? Let’s talk about what that could look like for your family. Unlike studio sessions, at-home newborn sessions offer a more personal and intimate experience. They allow your baby and family to remain in a familiar setting, surrounded by your own personal belongings. Staying at-home also allows you as a parent to feel more at ease and less stressed about the logistics of transitioning to a new setting. I often get asked by parents when is the right time to schedule newborn photos. Well, this is completely up to you, but here are some things to think about especially if you’re a first time parent.
Consider The Age
If you’re looking to document the size of your baby and remember a specific time in your family life at home, then schedule your newborn photos when you feel camera ready. This particular newborn family session was scheduled in the morning when their baby was about 10 weeks old.
If you’re hoping to capture more of your baby’s personality, then I suggest waiting when your baby is anywhere from 7-10 months old. This is right around the time when a baby is animated, giggly, and laughing. They are so cute at this age and it’s a joy to capture their personalities at this age. This particular newborn session was photographed in late February. The Winter light in Seattle can be very moody, but as long as you have some open window space, we can achieve a soft diffused light look for your newborn photos at home.
What Should I Wear?
There is truly no wrong time to schedule your newborn session for your family. I always say to all my clients: tell me when you feel ready. After all, you just did an amazing job birthing a gorgeous new life. It’s a moment in time to celebrate and honor this version of parenthood. If you need any help or advice on how to show up for your session, I’m always here to help you feel your most beautiful with careful consideration on comfortable clothing and colors to suggest. Think soft fabrics that feel good against your baby’s skin. Classic colors that will look good in photos years from now. You’re at home, so don’t even worry about shoes.
