Want to look natural in your family photos this year without trying too hard? Helping people look and feel like themselves in family portraits is basically what I do best. It really takes the right photographer to help you feel comfortable behind the lens. When it comes to families and children, I like to focus on the candid moments. How can we achieve that natural look? A little bit of play, and lots of interaction with your family members. I like to make sure my clients feel like themselves and not like they’re performing for the camera.
Here’s are some tips to help you achieve that natural look in your family pictures this year.
Stand Close Together
When posing for family pictures, it’s essential to close the gap in between bodies. This creates a sense of unity and warmth in your family photos. Have your family members put their arms around each other, or have them stand shoulder to shoulder. Try holding hands if it feels natural.
Angle Your Bodies
To create a more dynamic look, angle your bodies slightly. This will prevent the photo from looking too static and will add a sense of movement. Have each family member stand at a slight angle towards the camera, with their weight on their back foot.
Avoid Stiff Poses
Standing straight at attention looking at the camera can make everyone look uncomfortable. Instead, encourage everyone to look at each other. This will create a more authentic and relaxed look.
Consider the Background
The background of the photo can have a significant impact on the overall look and feel. Choose a location that is visually appealing and complements your outfit choices. Avoid busy or cluttered backgrounds that can distract from the main focus – your family. I’m always here to help you decide on a location that feels authentic to your family.
Try to Relax
Family photos don’t have to be stressful. Go in with a positive attitude and make sure that attitude spreads to the rest of your family members too. Low expectations deliver high quality results. Do not expect that your kids will behave during your family session. Let them be themselves and I promise you I’ll capture them when they’re at their best.
Don’t Forget The Outfits
The clothing you wear can have a significant impact on the overall look of the photo. Choose outfits that complement each other and that actually feel like something you would wear. Consider the style and theme of the photo, the time of year, and choose clothing that fits that mood.
